not properly controlled, can even be fatal. If not properly controlled, it can increase the probability of getting colon cancer and other serious problems. This disease is closely related to another disease called Crohn's Disease. I want to be clear upfront, probiotics did not cure me. Anyone that tells you that a single supplement cures you would not necessarily be telling you the whole truth here. I did have to have medical support by an amazing doctor from Digestive Disease and Associates, Dr. Charles Sninsky. He is one of the World's leading experts on UC and Crohn's and has been studying these diseases for over 30 years. Let's skip ahead a bit. 3 years later, I am in remission and the disease is well under control. Well, how did I get there? It was a combination of things for sure. Working on my stress for one. I use a product for stress by Country Life called Stress Shield, which has been a lifesaver for me. I changed my diet by getting rid of things that irritate the digestive system and body, like reducing gluten, eliminating alcohol, trying to eat a more well rounded diet rich in fruits and vegetables and the right amount of proteins from lean meats (preferably free range or grass fed). Of course, I use probiotics to support my digestive system and they have been one of the most important steps for sure. I do not use the highest dose available. In fact, the notion that more is better can be wildly incorrect. I know this from personal experience as well as from research. The fact is that modesty and balance are the most important ways to approach life and this would be true of probiotics too. Less is more. Probiotics in the range of 2 to 20 billion CFU would be more often than not the correct range. Higher doses have been shown in research to be well tolerated in the body but is it going to help more if you take more? There is much debate here but, in my opinion, supported by leading gastroenterologists and leading microbiologists, that answer is no. Less is more. In cases where antibiotics are used, food poisoning, and other issues, more may be necessary but only for a short time. After a short period in higher dosing, you should return to a modest dose between 2 to 20 billion. More important than dosing is making sure that the strains are of the correct type to support your specific needs. More strains also does not necessarily mean that the product is better. You want to make sure that there are about 7 to 12 strains divided between Lactobacilli and Bifido bacteria. There may be a few others as well. I would like to back up a little and tell you that I used to be the Chief Science Officer of a company called Country Life Vitamins. Because of this disease happening in my life, I resigned from Country Life and started my own company called Probulin. It is dedicated exclusively to digestive health and, more importantly, probiotics. Life circumstances can yield some of the most amazing outcomes. I have made it a life mission to encourage more people to use probiotics because I know that they can improve the quality of life. I know that if people take this (probiotics) seriously that they may be able to avoid many health issues later in life. I know that they helped me. I hope and pray that you let them help you too. They will prove to be the best pets you ever had. Abby's Magazine - January/ February 2015| Page 15
