New EPS Resin Minimizes Mold 13 Although EPS foam is mold resistant, when used in specialty applications like aquaponics it is susceptible to mold, algae and fungi. Takashima USA recently developed TAK Clean, an EPS resin containing an anti-mildew agent that is specially coated on the individual bead's membrane. This new specialty resin provides long lasting protection for submerged foam applications. It inhibits bacterial propagation and eliminates the unpleasant odors that they cause. It's also easily handled – TAK Clean undergoes the same process (storage, pre-expansion, molding and drying processes) as conventional EPS resin. The cellular structure of molded polystyrene is essentially impermeable to water and provides zero capillary. However, EPS may absorb moisture when it is completely immersed due to its fine interstitial channels within the bead-like structure. For more information on EPS and moisture resistance, read EPS-IA's technical bulletin EPS Insulation Mold Resistance.
