Audiences expect stadium-style seating in movie theatres, churches, auditoriums and gymnasiums. Today, there are virtually no new theatres being constructed without this essential amenity. Realizing stadium seating systems must be cost effective without sacrificing flexibility, functionality or aesthetics, many architects use EPS geofoam as a structural base material for stadium seating platforms. EPS geofoam stadium seating is a highly economical and time-efficient system. The geofoam blocks are delivered to the site completely prefabricated and ready for installation. The blocks are stacked-up to form the platform system. Gauge steel is then attached to the EPS to hold it in place and concrete is poured on the horizontal (and sometimes vertical) surfaces of the platforms to accommodate the seating. Because this system is installed late in the construction process (after all the 'high work' is complete), the contractor can avoid having to scaffold over the stadium risers, saving valuable time in the construction schedule. Each system is custom prefabricated to meet the unique design criteria of the project - the height and depth of each individual riser or intermediate step can be "made to order" so the audience experiences completely unobstructed views. In addition, the stadium seating can be configured in straight rows, in the shape of a segmented radius or a true radius depending on design concept and the building layout. The high compressive resistance and light weight of EPS geofoam make it well suited to both new construction and retrofit projects. In the case of retrofit applications, that fact can greatly reduce the cost of the project, as it does not affect current loads and capacities of the vertical building structure. Unlike traditional light gauge metal stud framed seating systems, which are hollow under the platform, geofoam possesses excellent acoustic properties. The design is perfect for church, balcony, worship facility, classroom, auditorium, lecture hall or movie theatre seating where state of the art sound acoustics are required or where they can enhance the sound and provide an interactive environment. In addition, where the installation is on an upper floor level with other occupancy below it, the use of the geofoam greatly reduces the sound transfer and provides an acoustic barrier between the adjacent floors. Adding to the advantages of EPS geofoam stadium seating is the maximum utilization of floor space. In many cases the overall height of the top platforms will allow usable space to be "tucked in" under the back of the stadium risers. By incorporating space under the risers, storage rooms, restrooms or similar function rooms can be located under the back of the riser platform. EPS geofoam is a cost-effective and efficient system that provides creates the best possible viewing experience for all kinds of audiences. EPS Seating – Coming to a Theatre Near You 12 Newsline
