The EPS Industry Alliance has signed the Declaration of the Global Plastics Associations for Solutions on Marine Litter, joining 58 associations from 34 counties around the world to provide sustainable solutions to marine litter; specifically plastics. The declaration describes steps to combat marine litter and suggests approaches and platforms for plastics organizations from around the world to leverage current programs and generate innovative solutions. Signatories are required to fulfill one of the Declaration's six major areas of focus for plastic makers: Plastics producers from around the globe will use the Declaration as a framework for action as they engage with world governments, NGOs, researchers and other stakeholders to enhance scientific understanding of marine litter and increase education on the consequences of litter in the oceans. Research and experience has shown that litter is the result of individual behavior – either choosing to litter or being careless in the handling of waste. In the case of marine litter, inadequate waste management infrastructure, insufficient recycling and littering are among the root causes of this worldwide problem. While rope and fishing gear constitute the greatest majority of marine debris, plastics are a primary target because they do not biodegrade quickly. Even biodegradable plastics might not break down in oceans. Because they are designed to break down when heated up in a landfill or compost pile, cooler ocean temperatures prevent these products from truly degrading. Click here to learn about the Declaration and projects underway across each continent to stem the tide of marine debris. Global Plastics Take Action on Marine Litter Solutions 5 Research and experience has shown that litter is the result of individual behavior – either choosing to litter or being careless in the handling of waste. Contribute to solutions by working in public/ private partnerships aimed at preventing marine debris. Work with the scientific community and researchers to better understand and evaluate the scope, origins, and impact of, solutions to, marine litter. Promote comprehensive science-based policies and enforcement of existing laws to prevent marine litter. Help spread knowledge regarding eco-efficient waste management systems and practices, particularly in communities and countries that border our oceans and watersheds. Enhance opportunities to recover plastic products for recycling and energy recovery. Steward the transport and distribution of plastic resin pellets and products from supplier to customer to prevent product loss and encourage our customers to do the same. 1 2 3 4 5 6
