Every winter season, indoor pipes are at risk of damage from freezing conditions. Low temperatures can cause water pipes to freeze - then burst. It's no surprise this winter's polar vortex, which sent temperatures plunging to record lows in most of the U.S., caused catastrophic water damage in many homes. Damage from water is the most prevalent – yet least recognized – catastrophe. Frozen and broken water pipes rank No. 2 behind hurricanes in terms of both the number of homes damaged and the amount of claim costs in the U.S. Damage from frozen and broken water pipes can be a homeowner's nightmare. When a pipe bursts, water gushes from the pipe like a fire hydrant. While the cost to repair a pipe might be minimal, leaks usually damage ceilings, drywall, floors, furniture, carpeting and electrical wiring which is expensive and time consuming to repair. Sometimes homes have to be gutted because mold and mildew cover every inch from floor to ceiling. According to the Insurance Information Institute property damage from frozen pipes totals about $1.4 billion a year on average. Potential damage from frozen and broken water pipes is preventable. One product has made winterization exceptionally easy, effective and cost efficient – EPS foam faucet covers. The insulating properties of EPS protects outside faucets from freezing in sub-zero temperatures. It keeps the warmth conducted from indoor pipes and water from escaping and thus prevents pipes from bursting. Even freeze proof faucets can benefit. Quick and easy to use, the covers are simple to secure over outdoor faucets (most have an adjustable slide lock) and can be reused year after year. While the rigid EPS insulation delivers long term insulation a soft foam base ensures a tight seal against the house. EPS faucet protectors help safeguard homes and are a small price to pay for superior protection against the harshest winter elements.
