78 AMERICAN POLICE BEAT: MAY 2009 Hey guys...what's up with the raincoats? Members of the British Transport Police and Amtrak Police Department are seen at 30th Street Station in Phila- delphia. Members of the British Transport Police were in Philadelphia as part of a U.S. and U.K. exchange of rail security practices. AP Photo According to a recent ar- ticle by the Bloomberg News Service, four U.S. fi ghter jets were scrambled to chase a stolen Cessna 172 airplane from Canada after the air- craft strayed into American airspace. The bizarre incident ended with an arrest on a highway in Missouri after the plane was forced to land, a military spokesman said. Two Wisconsin Air Na- tional Guard F-16s took off at about 3:25 PM Eastern time and intercepted the plane over the Wisconsin-Michigan border, Michael Kucharek, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace De- fense Command, said by telephone. Another two fighter jets from the Louisiana Air Na- tional Guard later took over the chase, which went on for about six hours. Eventually the pilot of the Cessna landed on U.S. High- way 60 about 23 miles north- west of Poplar Bluff. The pilot tried to fl ee the scene on foot, Kucharek said. Adam Leon, a 31-year- old naturalized Canadian from Turkey who previously called himself Yavuz Berke, was later taken into custody by the Missouri State High- way Patrol, according to a statement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI and the Depart- ment of Homeland Security said the incident was not re- lated to terrorism. Local law enforcement agencies in the town of Pop- lar Bluff and the state of Missouri will conduct an investigation.
