AMERICAN POLICE BEAT: MAY 2009 31 Police investigators check an assault-style rifl e taken out of a suspicious vehicle near the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. recently. U.S. Capitol Police arrested the occupant after searching his vehicle. In South Carolina recently, a man who cut off his own hand with a kitchen knife told police that God told him to do it. A witness who was working in the street nearby told Greenwood police that he heard the man scream, and then saw him standing in the doorway of his home holding a knife while he recited Bible verses, according to the report. PiedmontChannel.com reported that Greenwood police and emer- gency medical services responded to the 48-year-old man's home at about ten in the morning. Offi cers found the man lying in the doorway of his apartment with a knife on the steps nearby. When the responding officers asked the man why he cut off his own hand, he said that God had told him to. Emergency responders preserved the man's hand, but there was no indication that doctors were able to reattach it. Greenwood police said that the man didn't have "all of his faculties," and because it was a self-infl icted wound, they would be treating it as they would a suicide and would not be releasing any further informa- tion.
