ASK Abby ASK Abby Abby offers Free Consultations - Please call (813) 996-6999 Monday - Friday from 10 am - Noon to make your appointment Do you have a question for Abby? Send your inquires to: AbbysHealthAndNutrition@yahoo.com What do you recommend for cold hands and feet? WALLY In general cold extremities are caused by either lack of circulation, hormone imbalance or nervous system imbalance. If you find that when you are more stressed your hands are colder, then it may be a direct result of the stress response decreasing circulation. If so, a stress-reducing product may help. However, if you are missing Lunulae (the crescent shaped whitish areas at the back of your nails most visible on the thumb nail) then poor circulation is the culprit. "Vein Lite" by Chi Enterprise taken regularly will improve circulation and return of your missing "moons". Last but not least, you may have a thyroid imbalance and should rule that out with a full thyroid panel that includes not only TSH, T4 and Free T3, but also Reverse T3, TPO and ATA antibodies as well as blood levels of your iodine and vitamin D3. Twelve months ago my daughter (39 years old) had one half of her thyroid removed after a non-malignant tumor was found. Since that time she has been taking levothyroxine. Although her doctor says her TSH level is normal she is still experiencing hair loss, depression and weight gain among other symptoms. Could this be adrenaline or T3 regulated and what might you suggest as a course of action? PAULA I suggest your daughter have a full thyroid panel (see previous paragraph). Levothyroxine is strictly T4. "Armour" contains both T3 and T4 a better choice. Adequate treatment is not provided when TSH level alone is considered. Depending upon the results of a full thyroid panel, steps can be taken to bring the thyroid into better balance. Optimal blood levels of vitamin D3, iodine and Free T3 will assist in the optimal function of her thyroid. Adrenal function tests for cortisol may be helpful. Feel free to contact me after you have the results of her lab tests. Six months ago I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica. My lab work was normal but the doctor said that blood tests will often not reflect this form of autoimmune disorder. She suggested I try Prednisone treatment to see if I improve. I am resistant to taking a drug that has so many pervasive side effects. Can you suggest any alternative? Your feedback and help would be much appreciated. ELEANOR The following approach has proven very, very successful. I recommend the "5R" protocol, which includes a three-month anti-inflammatory diet along with several products including "Restore" to assist in the repair of the "tight junctions" of the gastrointestinal lining as well as the gut associated lymphoid tissue. In addition your blood level of vitamin D3 should be about 65 ng/mL. Low level of vitamin D3 has been linked to pain in many of my clients. Feel free to contact me by phone or attend our free seminar on gut health. What, if anything, can be done to control or heal annoying hemorrhoids? MATT Hemorrhoids are varicose veins of the rectum, usually worsened by constipation. Consequently, I recommend bioflavonoids containing rutin to strengthen the vein wall. Adding more fiber, such as chia seeds and taking magnesium to bowel tolerance will improve bowel motility. The homeopathic "Hemorrhoids" by Newton Laboratories works very well to lessen pain, swelling and bleeding. I've really neglected my health for 2 years and now want to start eating right, exercising, etc. what supplements will help me avoid saggy skin? Where can I get hyaluronic acid (HA) in capsules? Also, I'm allergic to shellfish so I can't take anything derived from seafood. HELEN Lose weight gradually to help avoid the skin from sagging. Take lots of vitamin C, preferably buffered and timed release to keep your blood levels elevated over 24 hours a day. Drink plenty of good quality water. Drink ½ your body weight in ounces per day. Take collagen: types I and III support skin and muscles, etc. while type II supports cartilage and joints. One of the most popular hyaluronic acid products at Abby's is "Baxyl", a liquid form with excellent absorption. Page 6 | Abby's Magazine - www.AbbysHealthAndNutrition.com
