THE DATA CENTER JOURNAL | 1 www.datacenterjournal.com FEATURE 2 DATA CENTER ENERGY: OUT OF CONTROL? By Jeffrey R Clark In the new millennium's first decade, data center energy consumption in the U.S. grew quickly and seemed to be approaching an exponential rate of increase. Naturally, the result for years afterward has been hand-wringing over the implications. But what factors are affecting data center energy consumption, and what—if anything—should be done about it? Let's take a look. 8 WAYS DCIM CAN INCREASE DATA CENTER ENERGY EFFICIENCY By Mark Gaydos Data centers account for an estimated 3% of all power consumption in the U.S. That's equivalent to the power used by over nine million average American homes for a year. And this figure is growing constantly. A 2016 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory report estimates a 4% increase in energy use from 2014 to 2020—the same rate as the past five years. The authors said, "U.S. data centers are projected to consume approximately 73 billion kWh in 2020." 12 DATA CENTER SUSTAINABILITY: A SHARED COMMITMENT TO ACCELERATED CHANGE By Aaron Binkley, Digital Realty With the rapid growth in enterprise cloud use, unbridled growth of big data, acceleration of DevOps and microservices initiatives, and increasing distribution of global workforces, the criticality and relevance of interconnected data centers has never been higher. But whether on premises or colocated, data center operation and growth comes at a cost. Beyond the hard dollars being spent on infrastructure expansion are other considerations. How those assets are constructed and managed can vary widely, and the impact that the different approaches have on the environment requires careful consideration to enable their ongoing viability. 16 WHAT YOU SHOULD ASK ABOUT DATA CENTER ENERGY EFFICIENCY By Victor Weatherford, Van Wilkins Ask a data center to list priorities, and uptime will top energy efficiency every time. As demand for data increases daily in almost every department of every business in every industry, data centers up and down the scale face requirements that can put energy efficiency even lower down a facility's to-do list. But a focus on energy efficiency can have a real impact on uptime. All rights reserved. No portion of DATA CENTER Journal may be reproduced without written permission from the Executive Editor.
