20 ista views • November 2017 • www.ista.org Looking Forward: As the test specification continues to evolve there are several areas that need to be refined. The portion of the testing that is most heavily referenced from outside sources is the vibration testing. The variation in vehicle delivery paths makes this part very difficult to collect, or even determine which path to choose for collection/mapping. ISTA and the ISTA TransPack Forum continue to provide vital information for our team in these areas. An additional data collection source will be the use of Lansmont Saver 3X90 units mounted to caster bases and/or the carts used in testing of various surfaces such as the diamond plate, asphalt, carpet, cobblestone and concrete, see picture 7. The idea being that perhaps these surfaces are all very similar and one surface would be able to represent them all for adding to the handling course, or maybe the surfaces are very different and need to be separately accounted for. It is also possible that this data collection could alter the current testing configuration as it may show that the carpet course is not needed if the caster is already tested on the handling course. Additionally, furniture dollies will be investigated for inclusion into the handling course as we have seen these used in product roll outs, but currently do not include them in our testing. Lastly, our experiences gained in the field continued to provide insight that could not be gained by working only in the lab. Now that our teams have developed this test it is important to make sure the test represents actual hazards the products may experience in the field. The best way to continue to improve, and refine this testing will be through more data collection and adjusting the test to match the field data as needed.
