Our western culture leads us to think dis-ease is normal and expected, especially as we age. We treat "symptoms" with a pill for the ill, never ques oning, understanding or addressing the root cause of the dis-ease. This broken mindset has spilled over to our pets, crea ng a mul billion-dollar industry of joint supplements and pain management drugs. Over 14 million pets in the U.S. have arthri s – many under one year of age Understanding The Root Cause of Inflammation / Degeneration Decreased oxygen u liza on is at the root of all chronic disease, and is the underlying cause of chronic pain and ssue degenera on. Some condi ons that contribute to inflamma on include: 1. Aging. As pets age, there is a decrease in circula on to ligaments and joints, resul ng in decreased oxygen u liza on in those ssues. 2. Injury/Trauma. Injuries to joints, such as torn anterior cruciate ligament, fractures from being hit by a car or chronic jarring (jumping off beds and couches) may lead to arthri s if the inflamma on is not resolved. Even normal exercise that is designed to build muscle, creates trauma in the ssue, resul ng in swelling and inflamma on which further decreases oxygen u liza on and increases lac c acid produc on, all contribu ng to more free radical damage. This cascade of events leads to sensory irrita on and pain. 3. Diet. Processed foods (kibble and canned) are high in carbohydrates (that promote inflamma on), lack diges ve The Root Cause of Joint Dis-Ease enzymes and may contain chemicals, pes cides and GMO's that all lead to leaky gut, resul ng in overs mula on of the inflammatory system. 4. Obesity leads to stress on joints and chronic inflamma on. Many toxins are stored in fat and released constantly into the body. Overweight pets cannot exercise properly. 5. Bacterial or Tick Borne Infection. Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spo ed Fever cause inflamma on of the joints. 6. Autoimmune Disorders. These condi ons result when the bodies immune system is not able to differen ate self from invader, resul ng in the body a acking it's own ssue. O en this is the result of chronic severe s mula on to the inflammatory system (from things like chemicals, pes cides and GMO's). The immune system becomes confused and over sensi ve, a acking any ssue that begins to resemble invaders. 7. High stress levels result in high sympathe c tone and high cor sol levels. High sympathe c tone will suppress parasympathe c tone (the side of the autonomic nervous system that is responsible for repair and regenera on). 8. Lack of exercise. Animals do best with a minimum of 20 min of exercise a day (this includes ki es!) Chronic pain is the result of a vicious cycle: Trauma decreased oxygen u liza on increased free radical damage ssue damage, edema, inflamma on further decreases oxygen and nutrients to ge ng to the cells which perpetuates Abby's Magazine - Volume 5 Issue 3| Page 57
