Abby's Magazine - Volume 5 Issue 2| Page 61 There are days that I am on the farm by myself. Mornings are beau ful about 7:30 as the sun is just coming up, and evening sunsets are spectacular. Being a volunteer on the farm is very rewarding. I meet wonderful people, learn so much about growing vegetables, herbs, fruit trees. Being a volunteer at the farm allows us to maintain the community gardens and take home fresh le uce, kale, green beans, peppers, cauliflower, tomatoes. How fantas c is that. Thank you Abby for having the vision." Rita Wickner "My house was the place where all plants went to die. I had no luck with them! Since I started volunteering at Abby's Farm, I have been able to par cipate in hands- on learning and immediately implement what I learn. Having a suppor ve group of people to learn from and to know that if you make a mistake you won't be kicked out is comfor ng. My children have been learning along side me and have helped me do things around the farm. When I'm at the farm by myself though, I like talking to the plants and the chickens, they are very good listeners, and they are not judgmental at all." Francine "Nutri on has always been a hobby of mine so I was really excited to hear that Abby's had bought a farm and was star ng a program where anyone could have a garden and learn how to grow organic produce. I've enjoyed the Eden Cafe at Abby's and could absolutely taste the difference in the foods they prepared. I wanted to be able recreate this at home so this seemed to be a great way to learn how to grow organics. By volunteering I can have my own garden or par cipate in the community gardens. I bring home eggplant, broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, herbs, le uces, kale and citrus and did I men on eggs! We have chickens at the farm and our li le girls have just started laying! So exci ng since we began this program in June 2016. What a team effort! It's been great fun pu ng all this together. I also love the fact that we are big into educa ng kids. We have a program for home schoolers to come for field trips and learn all about growing. I wish I had more me to volunteer. Right now it's only 2 - 3 hours a week over a couple days, mostly weekends, but it's been a wonderful experience. All the volunteers are so friendly. Some mes when I go there are several people working and at other mes I am there by myself just enjoying the sights, smells and sounds of a thriving farm." Kind regards, Elsa "My experience at the Farm: Working at the farm has provided me with a different meaning of what food means, I have learned so much about growing food and numerous possibili es of growing your own food. The environment at the farm is so conducive to learning and bringing that knowledge home is priceless. The incredible friendships developed at the farm and all I have learned there has made my experience at the farm one of the most rewarding investments on my me ever!" Lisbeth "As for me, it is such a pleasure and privilege to spend me everyday in community with these people developing our beau ful community farm. Our growth has been remarkable (1 1/2 yrs) and is largely organic by word of mouth and we are growing exponen ally. We've probably had 10-12 new volunteers get involved since January 1st. Check us out if you are looking for a really healthy hobby, in a really beau ful se ng, with some really cool people."
