Health and Wellness Magazine • 31 Dr. Larson-Ohlsen agrees, seeing herself as a facilitator and educator. "I believe that healing truly comes from within, and it is my role to guide women to find balance in their lives through a patient-centered relationship," she says. Both physicians work closely with patients to find customized approaches that incorporate treatments such as diet, supplements, exercise, herbs, acupuncture and mind-body practices. Conventional medical treatments are combined as necessary, the essence of integrative medicine. Both doctors predict the form of medicine will grow. "I think this trend will continue to build momentum and is the future," Larson-Ohlsen says. "People are starting to take charge of their health and wanting more natural treatments for prevention and wellness." The Doctors' Go-To Techniques Nutrition Dr. Carriere focuses on diet to a degree that goes beyond the usual guidelines. He looks into factors such as how much animal protein patients are eating, sugar and artificial sweetener consumption, and the ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids in their diets. The idea is that diet can produce or alleviate inflammation, which plays a major role in chronic pain and illness. Herbs & Supplements Dr. Larson-Ohlsen regularly uses herbal management for menopause, painful periods, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, PMS, and sleep disturbances. For example, both black cohosh and wild yam are anti- inflammatory herbs that reduce muscle spasms and ease cramping. Acupuncture A recent study by the University of California-Irvine (UCI) suggests that with regular use, electro-acupuncture could help people manage their blood pressure and reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke in the longer term. Yoga & Meditation A five-year study on Transcendental M e d i t a t i o n b y t h e A m e r i c a n H e a r t A s s o c i a t i o n s u g g e s t e d a 4 8 - p e r c e n t reduction for heart attack, stroke and sudden death.
