Obviously, the higher the exposure to a certain toxin or toxins, the more symptoms of the illness the body will manifest and the more immediate, or acute, the response will be. But what happens when the dose to which we are exposed is so small as to cause no immediate symptoms? Does this mean there is no harm done? Not necessarily. Many chemicals are slowly deposited in our bodies where they may remain, build up over time, and do lasting damage. It is for this reason that professionals in natural health care place a heavy emphasis on toxicity as a major cause of disease. What's more, no matter how toxins get into our bodies – through the lungs, stomach, or skin – they all meet the liver at some point and from there, get sent to the kidneys and colon for eliminating, become stored away in fat cells, trapped in bones, muscles, tissues, and organs, or get locked up in the liver itself. e fact many toxins park themselves in fat cells deserves special attention. Fat cells don't get broken down easily and sit like cargo bins weighing the body down physically. is is troubling news given the rising rates of obesity in the world. If you carry excess fat, you have to burn up those fat cells to release fat-residing toxins into the bloodstream for proper removal. We all know how difficult weight loss can be, so this presents an added challenge. In addition, toxins being released from fat stores may slow the thyroid down, a pivotal gland in regulating metabolism. When the thyroid slows down, so does your metabolism – leading to weight gain and low energy. As the toxins accumulate, they eventually eke out in unexpected ways. You begin to experience health problems, from minor ones like allergies and endless colds, to migraines and infertility, to full-throttle illnesses such as incurable cancer and dementia. Avoiding the fat-soluble toxins may sound like a solution, but that's difficult to do today. We have considerable exposure to fat-soluble, carbon-containing, toxic chemicals used as solvents, glues, and paints. Common cleaning products, formaldehyde, toluene, and benzene are all solvents (meaning they are capable of dissolving other substances) we can typically encounter in daily life when we pump gas, shop for clothes, buy a new car, and pick up laundry. ese fat-soluble chemicals collect in the fatty tissues of the body rather then being excreted quickly. ey are particularly damaging to those who are deficient in fatty acids, because a body deprived of essential fats is a body that will grab onto oily substances – even if that includes toxic substances like diesel fuel – just as a dry sponge readily soaks up water. ese compounds can cause liver and kidney damage, as well as skin irritation. The Toxic Hit List The Herxheimer Reaction • drugs • heavy elements and metals • household chemicals and solvents • infections • herbicides and pesticides • alcohol • air pollution • tobacco • water pollution • caffeine Cleansing is the process of cleaning out and reducing the toxic load that currently resides in your body. Because so many toxins hide beyond the bloodstream, the mere action of cleansing brings them out of hiding and dumps them into the bloodstream. When this happens, you can then "re-experience" the effect of those toxins all over again before they are flushed from the body. A cleansing reaction, also known as a Herxheimer reaction or a healing crisis, is the temporary physical discomfort that may result if toxins are released faster then your body can get rid of them. is can cause such symptoms as fever, fatigue, diarrhea, cramps, headache, increased thirst, appetite loss, flu-like conditions, skin eruptions or irritations. ese reactions are generally short-lived, oen lasting just a day or two, and usually no longer than a week. (Drug addicts who go through targeted programs for their particular substance abuse typically experience this reaction, and have been known to feel their highs all over again as those toxins come out.) Symptoms may range from mild to severe, depending upon the rate of cleansing. Abby's Magazine - Volume 4 Issue 1 | Page 53
