We tend to have some idea that the products under the sick – like the stinky sprays, disinfectants, and bleaches – are quite hazardous, but we forget about all the other potential toxins in our daily routines. (And some of us may not realize the level of toxicity emanating from our cabinets, as we take for granted cleaning products we falsely think are "safe" and use them liberally around the house, and around our families and children.) Among the most damaging personal care products are those that are scented, including cologne, deodorants, lotions, creams, bath salts, shampoo, cosmetics, soaps, body powders, and oils. Scented products can contain up to 5,000 chemicals in various combinations, the vast majority of which have had little or no human toxicology testing. Cosmetics contain not only fragrances (with all their component chemicals) but also metal salts. Mascara and eyeliners may contain lead or coal tar dyes, which are also found in hair dyes. In addition, hair dyes contain aniline dyes known to cause cancer in animals. Body powders made with talc can cause scarring of lung tissue when fine particles are inhaled. Some shampoos and hair conditioners, hand lotions, and hair colors contain a potentially dangerous antibacterial chemical called methylisothiazolinone (MIT). The good news in this is that you can make the most improvements in your life through minimal changes. It's pretty easy to swap out your old products for natural, environmentally friendly ones that can do the same job. It's also important to read labels, even though all ingredients are not always listed. If those that are listed are unknown to you and difficult to pronounce chances are they are potentially toxic chemicals to be avoided. Nontoxic Deodorants and Soaps The most active ingredient in most deodorants is aluminum chlorohydrate, a known toxin that can be readily absorbed through the skin. There are plenty of alternative products that can naturally deodorize sweat and, coupled with good hygiene, will provide you with more than adequate protection. Aubrey Organics and Tom's of Maine are in your health food store and offer an array of hygiene products, including a line of natural deodorants and toothpastes. Expunge the antibacterial soaps. I know they've been enormously popular recently but they will kill the good bacteria along with the bad. They may also contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. All-natural soaps will do the job without robbing you of the bacteria you need to maintain good health and a robust immune system.
