In Deepak Chopra's Magical Mind, Magical Body: Mastering the Mind/ Body Connec on for Perfect Health and Total Well-Being, the author points out some amazing facts about our body's capacity to heal itself. Quantum physicists have proven that 98 percent of the atoms in your body are replaced within one year. In three months your body produces an en rely new skeleton. Every six weeks, all the cells have been replaced in your liver. You have a new stomach lining every five days. You are con nually replacing old blood cells with new ones. Your skin is sloughing off dead cells and producing new skin monthly. The proteins in your muscles are in a constant state of flux as amino acids are catabolized (broken down into smaller units and released as energy) and new muscle ssue is synthesized. Even most of the physical cells that make YOU today were not there six weeks ago. Put simply, we possess a remarkable recupera ve ability when properly nourished, maintained, and detoxified. While detoxifica on is a natural func on, our elimina on channels can become clogged due to toxic overload and poor diet. To improve their func oning we want to follow a comprehensive detoxifica on program. C o n s t i p a t i o n C re a t e s a H e a v i e r Tox i c L o a d Cons pa on is the top gastrointes nal complaint in the United States. Few people realize, however, how this condi on – especially when it's chronic – can amplify your toxic load. And so many people are cons pated yet don't even know it! Being cons pated is not just a backup of waste; it can lead to a reabsorp on of toxins into the body and cause a further backup of toxins, which can then slow down the liver. Vegetables rank high on the detoxifica on program because they will help prevent cons pa on while also providing you with detox-suppor ng nutrients and the fiber you need to keep your bowels healthy and moving along your diges ve tract. A high intake of dietary fiber, which is the indiges ble complex of plant foods found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, decreases absorp on of toxins from stools and helps increase frequency and quan ty of bowel movements. Indigenous cultures that have a high intake of dietary fiber invariably enjoy superior intes nal health and are virtually free of the diseases of modern civiliza on. There are two basic types of fiber: soluble and insoluble – and both are valuable in detoxing. Soluble fiber (technically called pec n, gum, and mucilage) dissolves and breaks down in water. When it does, it forms a thick gel. It helps to think of soluble fiber as a sponge, actually soaking up toxins as it passes through your gastrointes nal (GI) tract and prolonging the me it takes your stomach to digest food so sugar is released and absorbed more slowly. Insoluble fiber, on the other hand (technically called cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin), also known as roughage, does not dissolve in water or break down in your diges ve system. Insoluble fiber passes through the gastrointes nal tract almost intact. Insoluble fiber moves bulk through the intes nes and controls and balances the pH (degree of acidity or alkalinity) in the intes nes. In doing so, it promotes regular bowel movements and prevents cons pa on, removes toxic waste from the colon, and helps prevent colon cancer by keeping the op mal pH in the intes nes to T h e B o d y 's D e t ox Page 40 | Abby's Magazine - www.AbbysMag.com
