Product 1: MTD Yard Tractor A MTD yard tractor is packaged in a wooden crate, Figure 2.1. The approximate dimension of crate is 70 x 47 x 36 inches. The yard tractor is exposed to the six vibration tests prescribed in Table 2.1 using a servo- hydraulic vibration table (Lansmont Corporation, Monterey, CA). Steel I- beams are placed underneath the crate to extend the vibration table to compensate for the overhang. After each test, the depth and width of tire damage is measured, using digital calipers. The measurements are performed on the location at which the tire makes contact with the wooden crate one point on the front of the tire and two points on the backside of the tire, Figure 2.2. If applicable, the points of damage for the two front tires are averaged and the three points of damage for both of the back tires is also averaged and documented. After each simulation, the tires are rotated to allow for another test to be performed on new tire tread. Product 2: Automotive Electrical Assembly, Packaged in Thermoformed Trays The automotive electrical assemblies, Figure 2.3, are placed in interlocking thermoformed trays with ten pieces in each tray. The trays are stacked 19 units high with an empty tray on top. Two stacks are placed side by side on the servo-hydraulic vibration table (Lansmont Corporation, Monterey CA) for vibration testing. The stacks are separated with a sheet of double wall corrugate, Figure 2.4, and incased with four pieces of single wall corrugate. A fifth piece of single wall corrugate is placed on top to contain the units and mimic the packaging system used in the distribution environment. After each test, the top eight trays are removed for inspection and then replaced with fresh trays and samples. The damage is measured visually and is based on the number of scuffs and abrasions present. The samples are identified by a number system, the first number indicates the test, the second number indicates which of the two stacks from the vibration test, and the last number indicates the position of the tray in the stack. The position of the tray is indicated with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, with one being the first tray from the top that contains product, 2 being the second tray containing product and so on. For example 2.1.3, indicates that the units underwent the proposed ASTM D4169 vibration test and is the third tray containing parts in the stack. 21 ista views • December 2015 • www.ista.org Figure 2.1: MTD Yard Tractor Vibration Table Setup Figure 2.2: Contact/Damage Points Figure 2.3: Automotive Electrical Assembly Figure 2.4: Thermoformed Tray Vibration Table Setup > MORE ON PAGE 22
