With this knowledge, we can do something about it. Exercise will help us lower stress and will also promote proper hormone balance. The very best type of exercise is high intensity interval training. With this type of training, you do not have to spend hours in the gym. All you need is four to twenty minutes to get a world class work out. The higher the intensity the workout, the lower amount of time you need to work out. There are certain types of enzymes and proteins that are that are only produced with this type of exercise with the added benefit of post workout neuro-endocrine activities. Exercising combined with proper diet is in-fact a true anti-aging strategy. This combination will slow the effects of cellular damage and enhance regeneration. Recent studies has shown that high intensity interval training does wonders on the body. Studies on both healthy (but sedentary) individuals, those with Type 2 Diabetes, have shown all out effort followed by a rest, improved insulin sensitivity and glucose levels. Our bodies are designed to heal and get strong so the benefits are immediate. Depending on the study, improvements came after just one session or within two weeks of exercising three times per week. Other benefits were increased mitochondrial activity, resulting in more energy production. When it comes to cortisol, it has been found that slow, long endurance training can cause spikes in cortisol, which is not good. Also, over-training will tax the adrenals. A key benefit of high intensity interval training is that periods of rest are included which prevents this. High intensity interval training is generally programmed for timed rests, however, it is important to always "listen to your body", and begin each set when you have had sufficient rest to go hard for the allotted time.
