Consumer Affairs Editor, Sean Poulter, reports on a major discovery based on a new study by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Europe's official food watchdog, showing a potentially poisonous gene in GMO crops that is being missed by current testing standards. What makes this finding particularly powerful is that the study was conducted by independent experts rather than GMO critics. Genetically modified crops such as corn and soy are being grown around the world for both human and farm animal consumption. When these food crops were initially assessed for safety, the presence of a virus gene potentially toxic to humans was missed and the International approval process for Genetically Modified crops failed to identify this gene. The study showed that the standard tests used are missing this and possibly other potentially poisonous genes present in our food. The report noted this danger: "Researchers discovered that 54 of the 86 genetically modified plants approved for commercial growing and food in the USA, including corn and soya, contain the viral gene, which is known as 'Gene VI'." What's interesting is that the FDA justification for approving genetically modified foods was based on not finding any indication of potential dangers in the modification of the gene, and the presence of this viral gene (Gene VI) is precisely what they were looking for (and should have found) since reproduction of this gene by the cell can result in toxins for the plant or animal ingesting the plant. The skyrocketing numbers of people developing allergies and intolerance to corn, soy and wheat since these crops became largely genetically modified, should be reason enough to require that these biotech companies like Monsanto prove they are safe. Instead Monsanto and the others are lobbying hard for laws protecting them from the effects of lawsuits much like the vaccine industry. New Discovery: GMO Crops Toxic New Discovery: GMO Crops Toxic
