BCT and Long Term Compression Performance Ian Chalmers provided compelling evidence that BCT does not predict long term compression performance, by testing boxes which were identical, except for the level of corrugated flute crush. Using a cyclic humidity test, which mimics what happens over 24 hour diurnal cycles in trucks or rail cars, he showed that boxes made with uncrushed board can maintain compression strength about 3 times longer than lightly crushed board, and 5 or more times longer than heavily crushed board – see figure 4 (Chalmers; 2008). Importantly – the crushing has modest effects on caliper and ECT and BCT - see figure 5 (Chalmers; 2011). 21 ista views • October 2015 • www.ista.org Figure 4: Effect of Crushing on Days to Failure in Cyclic Humidity Environment.
