t he common approach to creat- ing a truly resilient data center typically entails doubling-up (and then some) on just about everything. at means spend- ing capital on expensive servers with dual power supplies, dual power strips, double the circuits, double the PDUs, the UPSes and the backup generators. In essence, you're buying about twice as much stuff as you ever plan on using – and then that much again on your backup/disaster re- covery data centers. And when you figure that the workload in your typical data center, on a typical day, may be as low as 10-15% of peak capacity, you realize that there are huge amounts of redundant and idle pieces of equipment, tying up capital, and consuming energy. is "over-engineer" mindset is particularly acute amongst both IT and Facilities Managers in industries such as fi- nancial trading, banking and other similar businesses where the cost of "downtime" can be enormous (as much as $6 million a second, according to some banks). And these tend to be the types of companies who have the capital to spend. Exacerbating this situation is the con- tinued growth of the amount of computing that needs to be done. Among the drivers for adding further data center capacity to process information is the growing number of Internet connected devices. is trend is supported by ABI Research: "the Internet of ings surpassed 16 billion wireless connected devices by the end of 2014 and will contain 40.9 billion devices by 2020." Cisco basically confirms this by saying, "overall data center workloads will nearly double from 2013 to 2018, and cloud workloads will nearly triple over the same period." No doubt, the continued increase in data proliferation means there will be a need for additional computing By sev onyshkevych is chief marketing officer for fieLDvieW soLutions, THE DATA CENTER JOURNAL | 9 www.datacenterjournal.com
