WheelsOfGrace.com | Volume 14 Issue 1 | 13 1 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; 2 in you I trust, O my God. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies' triumph over me. 3 No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse. 4 Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; 5 guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. 6 Remember, O Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. You see them everywhere. You may even own one. They're sold anywhere bikers are found. It's that little shiny trinket on the bottom of many a bike fondly referred to as a biker bell. Widely believed (tongue in cheek for some) to be infused with magical powers, the little brass relic or fetish is credited with the ability to chase away road demons thereby keeping both the bike and rider safe. Maybe you don't believe in biker bells. Well then, let me ask you, "Where do you place your faith and trust?" Who looks out for you and ensures your safety? Do you place your faith in all the leather you can stand to wear? Your own impeccable riding ability? Loud pipes? A DOT approved helmet? A flashy, showy, attention-grabbing bike? These things are all certainly safety mea- sures, but they won't do you much good if someone on a cell phone happens to run a red light. In truth, our hope for our safety needs to be in the right place... not focused on a little piece of brass, mass-produced by some company seeking to make a buck. The psalm writer reminds us that those who hope in the Lord have REAL security that lasts. For he does not ever forget us - EVER! Unlike the little bell that gets tarnished, covered with oil and road grime, and soon loses its shiny newness, the Lord remains pure, faithful, unchanged, and more beautiful the more we get to know him. It is he who teaches us his ways and guides us in his truth. His mercy and love are timeless. They are always and forever extended towards us. The bell could lose its luster or fall off but trusting in God is tangible and certain. Those who hope in him, we are told, are never put to shame. Now, don't get us wrong. Motorcycles, like most anything else that is noisy and goes fast, can be dangerous. Good people, even Christians, die on motorcycles. But if you're looking for protection from road demons, begin with a faith in God Almighty, Creator of the universe before trusting in a manmade bell. 15 He [Jesus] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
