20 | WheelsOfGrace.com | #59 In this article we are going to talk about a rumor – and it's only a rumor - about the 2022 Harley-Davidson Icon Collection, and we'll talk about the models that they're discontinuing for 2022. First we're going to talk about the Icon Collection, if you're not familiar with the Icon collection, it is a line of motorcycles Harley-Davidson introduced in 2021 beginning the line with a copy of the 1969 Electra Glide first year they came out with the batwing fairing and from what Harley says they're going to be coming out with one or two of the Icon Collection every year that harkens back to different motorcycles, Icons that Harley made over the years. This being just a rumor from a pretty good source this is from a man who recently retired from Harley-Davidson worked on the assembly line and he said they have them going over a motorcycle that looks very much like a 1957 FLH. That bike was sort made famous by Elvis. He had one of those, a black one with every accessory that Harley- Davidson makes from the windshield to all the fender ornaments, sharp looking motorcycle. In fact, back in 2007 Bruce Ross Meyer's Harley- Davidson in Ormond Beach, Florida near Daytona built a replica of that bike which looked very much like it. Our source said that Harley had one and were taking parts from different motorcycles and he said, it was where the customizing of the Heritage and the 2018 and later Soft Tails was coming from. It was complete with the leather bags although they were hard bags they had a leather covering that looked just like the bags from the 1950s. He saw another one they were working on one, was a replica of the 1990 Fat Boy, that was the first year for the Fat Boy. He also said this bike in fact was silver, it had the yellow trim just like the 1990 model, but it was a 2021 or 2022 Fat boy that they were working on. It had the full fenders; I kind of like that idea because I love the original Fat Boys from 1990 up until the 2017 models had the full fenders. I love the fat fender look front and rear rather than that chopped rear fender they started doing in 2018. He didn't know what size tire was on the rear of this Fat Boy but it was a skinnier tire than they have now, similar to what they had on the pre-2017 Fat Boy. So, since Harley-Davidson said they're going to do one or two Icon models every year and since it's getting pretty close to the 2022 motorcycles I think it could be one of those two bikes or even both of them. I'd love to see either one of them, I like nostalgia and granted 1990 is not all that nostalgic but it is quite a while ago. And the Fat Boy is one of the iconic Harleys and the first Harley I ever owned. I know that there's people born in 1990 that are riding motorcycles now. So that's the two possible icon models. Again, just a rumor but it's a pretty good source. The source also said that he saw them working through the years on different types of motorcycles. He said they always had some type of prototypes going. The other thing I want to talk about is the three models that will be cancelled for 2022. First being the Sportster 1200 Iron. That bike will be discontinued. I can understand that because they got the new Sportster S out and Harley will still be making the other Sportster 1200, and the Sportster 883. Maybe this is the time to buy one of those Sportsters Iron as it could become a collector's item. I don't know, I would think it would take at least 15 to 20 years before. But with inflation, it might only take a year to get your original money back. It might be a bike to get and to keep. They will also cancel the Sport Glide. I don't know what the Harley- Davidson sales figures are or what they figure they should sell to continue making a particular model but, I thought this 2021 Sport Glide was very nice looking, with the gloss saddle bags, very sharp looking and quite a nice riding motorcycle. I guess it just didn't sell as well as they thought it would and I'm always curious about that through the years, how Harley has tried to make several different models that are baggers but aren't in the FLH model line. The Heritage is one that has done very well through the years. Harley also tried it a couple years RUMOR Harley-Davidson's Icon Collection
