Conclusions
Although the cloud has received a fair amount of hype
over recent years, it has developed enough of a foundation and a following to show that it isn't just a bubble that
will burst leaving nothing but hot air. Whether the cloud is
"mature" depends primarily on the definition of the term;
certainly, the cloud isn't perfect, as outages at prominent
cloud-service providers have demonstrated. Likewise, not
everyone is planning a wholesale move to the cloud at the
total expense of all other IT implementations. Naturally,
some mixing of strategies is inevitable. Nevertheless, the
growing reliance of customers—both companies and
consumers—on cloud-based resources, along with the
characteristics of existing solutions (such as those from Plex
Systems and Zadara Storage), indicates that the cloud, if not
mature, is quickly approaching maturity.
Like any hyped technology, the cloud may see some
pullback as overzealous customers reevaluate their inflated
expectations. But a more realistic outlook on the market
can't hurt. The cloud won't be the sole IT model of coming
decades, but its advantages—particularly in light of increasing reliance on mobile computing—have earned it a lasting
place. Again, one could argue over whether the cloud is
mature; perhaps a better question is whether the cloud is
a serious option in the minds of company managers when
considering their IT options. If companies are willing to bet
their IT on a particular platform, then it is probably close
enough to call mature. n
