A er all, I'd been riding street bikes for 17 years (and dirt the prior 10) without any serious accidents. But that's when things got hot and heavy in an instant! A er we departed the intersec on in the same direc on, the distracted driver a empted a U-turn from the right lane, just as I was beginning to overtake him from the le . Pow!! The loud crunch of the impact was immediately followed by a surreal silence. I at once found myself floa ng over the top of his vehicle in a bizarre, slow-mo on dream sequence. First I, then my bike, danced overhead the scene, rota ng over and over again in an unrehearsed ballet of flying metal and humanity. What took only a few seconds in real me seemed to drag on for minutes in my mind. It seemed I had all the me in the world to contemplate what was happening. A flood of emo ons followed: shock, fear and finally anger at the driver and his ac ons. My luck had finally run out. But then my anger turned to God: "Why was this happening to a believer? A er all, I had finally been embracing my faith like never before." Raised in church, I rebelled in my teens. Like most people in this situa on, my faith had mostly been my parents', not my own. Throughout most of my 20s I took my own path. But I somehow knew God was always right there ready to take me back. But in recent years I was pursuing Christ like never before. I had become very involved in my church. Revival among the youth was happening in a big way. Rela onships were being mended, and stories of deliverance from sickness and addic on were now a regular occurrence. Finally the faith I had was my own, and it was growing con nuously. So as I gazed down at the deadly-looking street scene coming up to receive me, I ques oned God. I didn't ask that my life be spared---I knew it would be all over in a moment. What I wanted to know was why….why now God? I was finally just beginning to understand who God was and who I was supposed to become. "Lord, why am I about to be smashed to pieces when I might now finally be able to serve You like I have been called!?" I wanted to hear God's answer before my imminent doom. But something more amazing happened. Instead of a booming voice from the sky, I felt a sort of warm goo coa ng me, head to toe. As this stuff enveloped me, I was certain that it came straight from Him. The sensa on was like being covered in a layer of protec on that nothing could break. Like a rubber ball, I felt as if I'd bounce off anything I would hit. I have never, before or since then, felt anything like it! I knew that God was not only protec ng me, but He was reassuring me that all was in His hands. A er this realiza on, a deep sense of peace fell upon me, and I let go of my fear. Real me took over from the slow-mo on, and I fell to the ground fast and hard. Then I was knocked out. Cut to Donna, a co-worker and member of my church about to leave for work. Before leaving the house, she paused to say a prayer for her daughter-in-law, about to give birth. Donna prayed because this was the couples' second a empt. The first baby was lost in a miscarriage. As she prayed for the girl, my name suddenly popped into her head. A emp ng to ignore this odd promp ng, she tried to con nue. Yet my name persistently appeared. Donna later told me she was a li le upset that she couldn't focus on her own family situa on. But she had been a prayer warrior long enough to know it was me to put her own needs aside for a moment. So Donna prayed that God would give me guidance, strength, mercy and protec on. She asked that God give me what I needed because she didn't know those needs, only He did. A er that, relieved, she finished her prayer for the baby, then she le for work. Flying HigH
