Abby's Magazine - Volume 5 Issue 6| Page 49 We know from the early work of Weston Price and others, the key role of nutri on. Price logged in thousands of miles actually looking! He cataloged the diets of remote popula ons with healthy teeth and good oral structure and proved the predominance of nutri on in dental health. We can build on those observa ons and mount a real offensive by applying this philosophy; Trea ng kids is about trea ng the en re family. The family is the essen al element for change, a self contained support group with every interest in crea ng a be er tomorrow. Admi edly, part of our strategy is having parents bring their children in and when they see what is nutri onally impera ve for the child, it is mo va on enough for parents to change too! Oral health of the mother must be closely monitored . Pregnancy changes the oral environment, fluctua ons of pH, alkalinity, and hormones can directly promote new pathogens to be introduced. Along with everyone in the household, the baby's oral flora can mature into a healthy organic biome. How early can my baby be seen? A: as soon as possible! Unfortunately, the sta s cs are very low for young children seeing a den st as compared to a primary care physician. But, with the greater acceptance of the importance of the mouth in overall body health, this is changing. It has to change as we see dental caries and poor mouth structure appearing at younger and younger ages. Here are the winning ac vi es for children: 1. Prenatal health educa on for everyone. It is cri cal to know the role of minerals, vitamin D and fat soluble vitamins in prenatal development. In addi on, a diet low in lec ns and phytates will help vitamin and mineral absorp on. These an -nutrients are plant toxins found in many grains, seeds, and legumes which bind nutrients, making them bio-unavailable. The idea of prenatal nutri on needs wide circula on, family to family and out into the culture. 2. We monitor infants for lip or tongue es, a condi on where the baby's tongue seems to be tethered to the floor of the mouth. Some mes at birth these tethers fail to detach and the infant has a harder me breas eeding. But, what is really interes ng is how these es inhibit proper cranial development. 3. Diet has tremendous impact in the forma ve years of oral development, perhaps even more than brushing. With the wrong diet, we see the development of narrowed jaws and tooth crowding, with a likelihood of tooth and gum disease and impeded electrical flows in the body. 4. We do not advocate interven on in the child's mouth with drilling and filling material, but rather a strategy to reset the oral environment through remineraliza on and addressing the microorganisms popula on with probio cs. Demineralization & Remineralization How is it that Weston Price found many remote cultures where teeth were in excellent condi on, not showing any signs of decay and poor structure? Most likely, they were ea ng daily carbohydrates and sugars which are deemed
