LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP "The foundation to hiring and developing great leaders is to first establish the 6-8 key foundational leadership competencies which enable a leader to be successful at their company," shares Neil Cohen, AD's Vice President of HR and Organizational Development. "While there are tools to help companies through that selection process, the competencies and associated behaviors will be specific to them — one size doesn't necessarily fit all. Once selected, those competencies should be woven in to the way the company hires, evaluates performance, trains/develops, conducts talent reviews, and plans for management succession." Achieving this, however, isn't always a walk in the park. "Filling leadership positions isn't easy," confirmed Joe Milot, President of Protective Industrial Products (PIP) Inc. in Latham, NY. "At our size, we need 'hands-on' leaders who don't just set objectives and watch dashboards, but who pull up their sleeves to get the job done. While we do believe that there's a component of leadership that's innate, much of it is skillset-driven. Good leaders build dynamic teams by inspiring and leading by example. They maintain composure during crisis management situations and offer solutions, not blame, and they also practice coaching every day and calmly provide constructive criticism while openly praising employees who go above and beyond. Over the years, we've built up a strong and highly experienced leadership team, but in the last couple of years we've focused on recruiting new leaders from outside of our industry, which provides us with diversity and gives us a different perspective while enriching our already-strong arsenal of best practices," he said. For David Weber, President of Ontario-based Weber Supply Company Inc., "we look for individuals that share the same values we have. We carefully assess their ability to fit within the culture that we've created and look for their experience and knowledge of our industry." continued from page 92 K n o w Yo ur S tr en g th s #ADSTRONG | AD Today 2017 | 91 Neil Cohen Vice President of HR and Organizational Development AD David Weber President Weber Supply Company Inc.
