We often find that when employees of different generations work together to achieve an objective, the generational differences seem insignificant and they're able to learn from each other. We need every person to be engaged in the customer- focused culture that represents 'the HDI way,' not the baby boomer, genX, or millennial way." National Gypsum's Hessert agreed. With today's diverse employee base, "we're cautious about labeling demographics – it's not 'us' and 'them,'" he said. "We feel we're in very good hands with the generation coming up, particularly in a market so driven by changing technology, and that they'll lead us to great things in the future." Werner Electric's Granley acknowledges that the generations do often think differently and exhibit different work styles on the job, which is important to recognize and address proactively. "But we incentize by teams, not by generations, and we encourage our managers to get to know everyone," he said. "Ultimately, everyone needs to be flexible, work as a team, do their part, and work off of each other's strengths to achieve maximum success." AD's Maroni confirmed that he's experienced success by leveraging the generational diversity within the AD Building Materials team, which spans three generations. "We ask our team members to bring their generational ideas to the table," he said. "This supports our best efforts to continue to change with our membership's generational shift by enabling each member of the team to own that responsibility and contribute their generational ideas to improving our focus and staying ahead of the inevitable changes."
