A Time-Honored Tradition 25 Centuries
in the Making
Based on four foundational skills—handstand, tumbling, flexibility
and dance—familial Chinese acrobatic troupes have taken the artform
from the fields and harvest celebrations to the world's most prestigious
stages, with a monumental amount of training and dedication thrown
in. "Seven minutes on stage is equal to seven years of training," say the
training schools, just making sure their youngest students understand the
significance of their task as they practice one more handstand.
Danny Chang is the group's director and producer and the man
responsible for bringing Golden Dragon to the U.S. Having grown up in
the company from age 7—an acrobatic family trade standard—Danny
inherited the group from his father and founder, Mr. Chang Lien Chi,
after he moved on from the company of acrobats he had cultivated since
1947 to accept a top coaching position at the National Taiwan College
of Performing Arts.
Since its formal establishment in 1967, the award-winning Golden
Dragon Acrobats have toured extensively across the United States and the
world, showcasing ancient acrobatic skill and traditional dance. "When
the Golden Dragon Acrobats come to town, wonders stack up," says e
New York Times. "e thrill is escalation. ese touring acrobats from
China know how to keep topping themselves." ■
