CHIROPRACTIC =JOINT HEALTH Joints are where one bone connects with another. Joints are the space between the bones that allow for proper movement and function. Our body has many different types of joints, from those that barely move at all (like the sutures in your skull) to synovial joints that move in many different directions (like your shoulder joints, ankle joint, hip joint, spinal facet joints, etc.). We know that when the joints move properly, your muscles and ligaments function at an optimal level. This allows you proper function and no pain. However when joints do not work properly, this leads to a whole host of problems. Primarily, when the joints do not work properly, the muscles and ligaments cannot function properly either. They will tend to either shorten or elongate, depending on the joint problem. When this occurs, they leak toxins that irritate local tissues and nerves. This leads to further pain and dysfunction that compounds until the underlying issue is resolved. What causes joints not to work properly? There are basically three factors. One is a mechanical. Macro trauma (big trauma) such as a car crash or bad fall and micro trauma (repetitive use injury) which can lead to joint damage. Sitting in front of your computer wrong is a very common mechanical mistake that leads to joint dysfunction. Make sure you have strong lumbar support that will force you not to slouch in your chair. Another factor with your posture in front of your computer is the position of your neck. Alot of people work on lap tops which cause them to have a forward head translation and extreme flexion of the cervical spine that leads to fixation of the lower neck joints. Poor posture while you sleep can also cause joint problems. Having the right kind of pillow is crucial for spinal health. When you are sleeping on your back your pillow should be thin so your head is in a relaxed position. When your pillow is too thick it causes your head and neck to be pushed forward which leads to joint issues and can cause a stiff neck in the morning. When sleeping on your side you want to make sure your pillow is thicker to allow the head and neck to be parallel with your mattress.
