Chondroi n is one of the most sought a er joint-suppor ng supplements available on the market today due to how it helps rebuild car lage naturally and boosts recovery of ssue a er injury or exercise. Commonly available in formulas containing similar and complimentary supplements like glucosamine and MSM, it's taken by many people with joint pain, osteoarthri s, and other signs of "wear and tear" due to aging. These substances are o en used together because they have similar mechanisms of lowering inflamma on and trea ng pain — plus they're considered very safe and pose li le risk for side effects. Although not every study has shown that chondroi n is capable of helping everyone who experiences joint pain, many studies do show support for its effec veness and also safety. It's an important structural component of car lage and one of the key substances that allows joints to withstand pressure. The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database has classified chondroi n as "possibly effec ve" for osteoarthri s (and glucosamine as "likely effec ve"), and many other authori es stand behind its use for figh ng joint pain naturally in place of prescrip ons. What Is Chondroi n? Chondroi n is a natural substance found in the human body and a major component of car lage, which helps build connec ve ssue throughout the body, including those that form joints and the gastrointes nal (GI) tract. Because it works by retaining water, it helps add lubrica on and flexibility to ssue and joints. When found in supplement form, it can either be derived naturally from the car lage of animals (including cows, pigs or sharks) or man-made. Drinking bone broth is probably the greatest way to obtain both glucosamine and chondroi n at home. The form of chondroi n made in laboratory se ngs is called chondroi n sulfate, which is a combina on of chondroi n and mineral salts that help improve its absorp on. Supplements containing chondroi n can go by many different names depending on the product's specific formula: chondroi n glucosamine, glucosamine sulfate and chondroi n sulfate are all names you might encounter, for example. While the terminology might seem confusing, the various forms available can mostly all be used in same way. Chondroi n Benefits and Uses 1. Helps Treat Osteoarthri s Joint Pain Es mates show that over 27 million adults in the U.S. live with osteoarthri s, which is the most common type of arthri s and degenera ve joint disease that's characterized by the breakdown of car lage and increased joint pain. Chondroi n sulfate is commonly used to treat pains associated with osteoarthri s, especially forms that affect very suscep ble body parts like the knees and hands. Overall, studies have shown that use of chondroi n tends to cause modest improvements in joint pain over the course of several months, although some people experience even more benefits and more quickly — especially when combining several supplements together and making other changes like ea ng an arthri s diet to treat symptoms. According to the Arthri s Founda on, on average study par cipants usually experience about a 10 percent improvement in painful symptoms when using chondroi n compared to placebo. The best results are usually achieved a er using a product containing it for three months or more. Recently, the University of Utah's School of Medicine conducted the largest- ever clinical study inves ga ng the by Dr. Axe CHONDROITIN Benefits for Osteoarthritis & Joint Pain Page 30 | Abby's Magazine - www.AbbysHealthAndNutrition.com
