A NOVEL PLOT MARIA SEMPLE's second novel, Where'd you go, Bernadette, will be published by Little, Brown and Company this month. Maria previously wrote for television shows, including Arrested Development, Ellen and Mad About You. Her writing also has appeared in The New Yorker and The Los Angeles Times. Where'd You Go, Bernadette takes place in Seattle and uncovers the relationship between Bernadette Fox and 15-year-old Bee, her daughter. When Bernadette disappears, Bee compiles email messages, official documents and secret correspondence in search of her mom—and of misplaced genius and mother-daughter connection. The novel was featured in People magazine and The Guardian wrote that "the pleasures of Where'd You Go, Bernadette are the pleasures of the best American TV: plot, wit and heart." Maria joined the WAC in 2009. She'll be reading at 7 pm on Tuesday, August 14, at The Elliott Bay Book Company. THE GREENEST GUY IN SEATTLE DENIS HAYES, the first national coordinator of Earth Day, founder of the Earth Day Network, and a TIME Magazine "Hero of the Planet," is developing the greenest commercial building in the world—the Bullitt Center. Denis is CEO of the Seattle-based Bullitt Foundation, whose mission is to "safeguard the natural environment by promoting responsible human activities and sustainable communities in the Pacific Northwest." The Bullitt Center, located on Capitol Hill across from McGilvra Place Park in Seattle, is leasing now and scheduled for completion by the end of this year. The six-story building will be the nation's first urban midrise commercial project to meet the rigorous goals of the Living Building Challenge. It will house the Center for Energy & Urban Ecology and provide a place dedicated to educating and training pioneers of the emerging green economy. The Bullitt Center will generate all its own energy and use rainwater to meet its water needs. Denis grew up in Washington state and joined the WAC in 1994. He has been awarded the World Bank's Global Environmental Leadership Award and has received the highest awards bestowed by the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation and others.
