America's #1 GMO COOKIE Dear Readers: More than 70 million Oreos are sold every day, in more than 100 countries around the world. Americans spend over $700 million on Oreos each year, almost $1 billion per year if you count sales of Double- Stuf! Whether or not you like Oreos, it's undeniable that "America's #1 cookie" has a major impact on our food system. Join us in calling on the maker of Oreos to make America's #1, billion-dollar cookie, non-GMO! Many of the main ingredients in Oreos are genetically engineered. The high fructose corn syrup, beet sugar, and soy lecithin in Oreos are all derived from GE crops. GMOs are engineered to work in conjunction with toxic agrochemicals, such as glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup. Glyphosate has been deemed a probable carcinogen, is linked to health concerns, and has caused the development of super weeds. While genetically engineered crops were marketed as a solution to heavy chemical use, they have actually led to an increase in toxic pesticide use, including a combination of 2,4- D (a main ingredient in Agent Orange) and glyphosate. These pesticides are destroying the soil, making farmers more dependent on synthetic fertilizers, which have entered waterways and caused massive aquatic dead zones. GMOs and their corresponding agrochemicals are not worth it, no matter how much America loves Oreos. Tell Mondelez it's time to go non-GMO with Oreos. General Mills, Hershey, Pepsi and many more companies have already begun to offer non-GMO products. Mondelez is a major food company with a global presence, which could bring positive changes if it began to offer non- GMO and organic products. Together we are changing our food system! It's time for Mondelez to go non-GMO and support more sustainable agricultural practices. Thanks for helping build a more sustainable food system. by Michael Stein Food Campaigns Manager, Green America America's #1 GMO COOKIE Page 14| Abby's Magazine - www.AbbysHealthAndNutrition.com
