Over the last 15-plus years, there has been a significant transformation in the retail environment, driven by a huge expansion to online sales (see figure 1 on page 14). This change has made the retail businesses adapt their supply chain models to support the burgeoning business of online sales. The changes have taken place in a number of different formats; from building networks of single package flow paths to dedicated warehouses for "direct to consumer" fulfillment. In all these different flow paths, there becomes a greater challenge for anyone designing packaging, since the opportunity for different environmental hazards increases and becomes less predictable. However, what must be kept in sight is that within the traditional brick and mortar retailers, which still dominate the market, the product flow path is more controlled and predictable than the ecommerce environment. And with sales volume typically driven through retail stores, it becomes a challenge for the packaging designer to focus their attention on meeting the demands of the direct to consumer environment; or managing the package cost to the more predominant and predictable retail store environment. There is no simple or easy answer for these challenges, but there are some insights that can help guide your approach. > inside Inside ISTA Headquarters • TransPack Forum Program • TransPack Forum Sponsors • Asia Pacific Symposium pages 2-6 Welcome New Members & Membership News • 2016 Resource Books • ISTA Annual Membership Meeting pages 8-9 CPLP Corner pages 10-11 ISTA Technical Update • Understanding 2016 Protocol Changes pages 12 Adapting to the Re-configuration of the Retail Supply Chain The following paper was recently presented at ISTA's 2015 TransPack Forum in Orlando, Florida.
