Outdoor markets fill with an abundance of fruit and vegetables. Street fairs and festivals leave attendees smiling on warm afternoons. Summer is right around the corner, and locals and visitors alike are laying plans for how to spend the long, lingering hours of Seattle daylight. For members of the Washington Athletic Club, the WAC stands at the center of the action, offering premiere access to activities downtown and far afield as well as inspired program planners and a commitment to helping you create your ideal Northwest summer. The hard part is deciding precisely how to spend your time. Then again, choosing your adventure can be half the fun. Just make sure to choose wisely. Summer never lasts long enough, and those lingering evenings of soft light always seem to end too soon. HE SUN SHINES BRIGHTLY on downtown Seattle. The sound of laughter mixes with eureka-style shouts of joy and carries across the urban waterway as teams strive to solve cryptic clues and riddles. Welcome to the annual WAC Scavenger Hunt, which takes place July 20. Now in its fifth year, the event offers a perfect expression of the Club's approach to summer—it provides a new perspective on a familiar landscape, including spectacular houseboats and the Seattle skyline; healthy competition; and a delightful setting for making new friends and teaming with old ones. The winners earn a year's worth of bragging rights—not to mention a large black pirate duck. Participant Diane Sardeson still recalls the time she was leaning over the water, calling to a couple sitting on a park bench on the shore. Her husband, a retired Coast Guard captain, navigated the boat delicately. "I nearly fell overboard trying to get their attention," Diane says with a laugh. "It's a hoot—a perfect combination of beautiful weather and fun." Golden walls surround you. Welcome to King Tut's tomb. Following a tradition of VIP access to celebrated exhibitions, 200 WAC members will soon have exclusive entry to "Tutankhamun: The Golden King and The Great Pharaohs" at Pacific Science Center. The exhibit includes the pharaoh's golden sandals and a hundred other objects—twice as many as the original tour in the 1970s. In a style befitting the subject, this exclusive group will enjoy a private reception in the Laser Dome and an introduction to the show. Although the WAC's private tour has sold out, a waiting list is being kept. You also can check out the exhibit on your own. It will be at Pacific Science Center May 24– January 6, 2013.
