e US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first genetically modified food animal – an Atlantic salmon that grows twice as fast as natural salmon. e FDA will not require any additional labeling identifying the genetic alteration of this salmon. e food industry is trying to convince the Senate to preempt state labeling, and halt federal labeling, by introducing QR codes on foods, which gives the appearance of providing information on GMOs. QR stands for Quick Response, and the code can be scanned and read by smart phones and other QR readers. e code brings you to a product website that provides further details about the product. So instead of declaring ingredients right on the box so you can see it at the moment of purchase, you have to navigate through the product's website to try to figure out of any of its ingredients are transgenic. Important actIon Item: Speak to Your SenatorS! At this point, it's really important to contact your Senators to tell them that QR codes do NOT in any way eliminate the need for GMP labeling. In fact, QR codes or SmartLabels are inherently discriminatory, since you cannot use them unless you own a smartphone. irty- six percent of Americans do not own one. Moreover, only 50 percent of low income people and those living in rural areas own a smart phone. – ShockIng newS – FDA Approves Genetically Engineered Salmon waIt…. IS It a FISh, or a Drug? But that's not all. e FDA is not regulating Aquabounty's salmon as food. It chose to review it as a drug. at's right, all GE animals, starting with this GE salmon, will be regulated under the new animal drug provisions of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, "because the recombinant DNA (rDNA) construct introduced into the animal meets the definition of a drug." Yet the reason it puts forth for not requiring a label is that it's nutritionally equivalent to conventional farm-raised Atlantic salmon. So which is it – a fish or a drug?
