Health and Wellness Magazine • 39 minimize damage – To have healthier hair, going all natural is best, Lee says. "Natural gray white hair is gorgeous and is popular now," says Nicole Zamora, owner of My Hair Trip Salon in Denver, which specializes in organic products. Traditional hair color can be drying and irritating to the scalp since it contains harsh chemicals. If a woman must dye her hair, then she should switch to an ammonia-free hair dye. Zamora uses an oil-based color, which is gentler on the hair without the fumes and chemicals. To soften course gray hair and give it shine, she recommends oil treatments with essential oils, and for regular care she advises washing every three days instead of daily being sure to condition the ends. Women also need to protect their hair from the elements – wear a swim cap at the pool and wear a hat, scarf or a thermal serum product to guard against the sun and wind, especially in Colorado. To lessen the effects of aging on skin, women should be wearing a sunscreen with a UVA and UVB blocker to prevent further sun damage. "Having both is more important than the number you use," says Bishop-McClure. "The UVA blocker protects skin from the 'aging' rays, while UVB protects it from the 'burning' ones." Sagging is going to happen, but facial yoga and increasing cell turnover can help. A good skin regimen will include sun protection, exfoliation, cleansing and moisturizing. Women should avoid abrasive exfoliants and foaming cleansers that dry out the skin. Chemical peels and microderm abrasion can rejuvenate skin and are short of a face lift and plastic surgery. "See an aesthetician to get a recommendation for your individual skin type," Bishop-McClure says. "There's a glut of products out there, and what helps your friend or sister may not work for you."
