Page 28 | Abby's Magazine - www.AbbysHealthAndNutrition.com Buying Organic: Benefits Beyond Your Health By: Abby Housefield If you are reading this, there is a good chance you believe purchasing organic products and produce are better for your health and the health of your family. You understand there are more nutrients in organic food. You recognize the health benefits of not using toxic pesticides and herbicides to grow organic food. And you appreciate the true flavors of organic food. All of the reasons listed above are perfectly good reasons to buy organic foods. However, here are 5 more reasons to buy organic products and produce. These reasons go beyond YOUR personal health. 1. Organic Farming is Better for Wildlife Wildlife is substantially richer and more varied on organic farms. A typical organic field has 5 times as many wild plants, twice as many butterflies, over 50% more species and 44% more birds in the area than a conventional farm. (Eating Organic lettuce = Restoring wildlife) 2. Organic Farming is Better for the Soil Studies show that organic fields have deeper vegetation and 88% MORE "epigeal arthropods" (soil creatures). A Swiss study revealed that organic soil also has more fungi that attach to the tip of plant roots and help the plants absorb nutrients. Included in all these soil creatures are more PEST-eating spiders and beetles! A group of scientists in Washington found soil on organic apple orchards to hold more water and resist soil damage better than conventional farms; which was more energy efficient and required less labor and less water per apple! (Mother Nature knew what she was doing before we got involved!) 3. Organic Food is Better for Animal Reproduction 10 out of 14 animal studies showed that animals are healthier when fed organic feed. Female rabbits fed organic food had twice the amount of ovum production and chickens fed organic food have almost 30% higher egg production. (And we wonder why humans are having fertility issues?!) 4. Organic Farming Protects the Climate It is pretty obvious that the climate is changing. Weather patterns aren't the same as they once were. Remember reason #2 and all those extra bugs crawling around in the organic soil? Well, those creatures carry and store carbon. When carbon is stored in the soil, it helps slow down global climate change! Organic fields produce 28% more organic carbon than conventional fields! 5. Organic Food is Safer Organic farming generates more jobs, produces more profit and doesn't pollute groundwater with nitrogen run-off. It also avoids the risk of side effects associated with GM (genetically modified) crops. Farmers in Canada, Nebraska and Kansas who used a specific pesticide suffer from a higher rate of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (a cancer). (Buy organic for the health of you, your family, and the farmer!) Buying organic for your own personal health and the health of your family is reason enough to buy organic. However, the beauty of organic is the benefits go FAR beyond ourselves! Buying organic touches the world!
