Health and Wellness Magazine • 39 When Mom, Kimberly Grimes, arrived at Sky Ridge three weeks before her due date, her water had broken, but she had no contractions. After waiting as long as possible for birth to progress, the medical team began induction. That's when baby Brielle rebelled. With each induction attempt, the baby's heartbeat would drop, and the team would have to stop and wait before trying again. After a final try, the obstetrician deemed Brielle's heart-rate recovery too slow, and a C-section was ordered. "Yes, it was an emergency, no question," says Dr. Charles Giarratana, who delivered the Grimes' baby. "From the minute we hit the operating room to the time the baby was born was seven minutes, which attests to the skill and teamwork of the whole group," says Giarratana, who, as one of the first OB/GYN's on staff at Sky Ridge in 2004, has delivered quite a few of those 30,000 babies. "And the baby was healthy. That's what the parents cared about." Although it sounds scary, Grimes says she was never overwhelmed, as she was well-informed by the medical team. "There were nurses running around, and people poking and prodding, and oxygen masks going on, but I felt sure about what was happening. I knew I was in good hands," she says, adding that husband, Blue Grimes, like many expectant dads, was probably more nervous than she was. And the remaining hospital stay, although not so exciting, was also memorable, particularly because of the staff, Grimes says. "All the nurses were fantastic," she says, adding that the Littleton-area couple chose Sky Ridge for its proximity and because "all of my friends delivered there and fell in love with it." And who knew? Now their baby's a star – balloons or no balloons. Turn to page 49 or visit www.skyridgemedcenter.com to learn more about the Birth Place's exciting expansion.
