national I REPORTS The Budget Battles Begin In targeting programs for funding cuts, House Republicans revealed their anti-woman agenda I 12 | SPRING 2011 F WE DIDN’T KNOW QUITE WHAT THE TITLE OF TANYA MELICH’S BOOK THE Republican War Against Womenmeant in 1996, we certainly do now. Just look at H.R. 1, the bill House Republicans passed in February to keep funding the U.S. govern- ment. Although it has no chance of being signed into law in its current form, it’s a frightening preview of what’s in store from a House controlled by archconservative, ideologically hard-line members. Family-planning funding in the U.S. and abroad? Decimated by H.R. 1. Educating preschoolers? Why give them a Head Start? Nutrition for low-income women and kids? Slashed. Implementing health-care reform? Forget about it. Food safety?Who cares. Money for flu shots? Sorry. Teen pregnancy prevention? Just say no. The U.S. government has been operating on temporary funding—“continuing resolutions”—since October, as the fiscal year 2011 budget has never been approved. H.R. 1 was thus long overdue, but when a final version is signed into law—probably in www.feminist.org DEAN HOFFMAER/RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH/AP PHOTO
