The Summer 2009 Ms. cover (right) echoes the first, Spring 1972 (left). probably done more for women and girls who play baseball than anyone else, owns a list of firsts that now includes being the first woman hired as a coach of a men’s professional baseball team. I do get irritated, how- ever, when stories like this assert that Justine (or other women) plays “men’s baseball.” Justine and a hun- dred thousand other girls and women around the world play BASEBALL. The game does not belong to men. It’s the American National Game, and it belongs to all of us. —Dorothy Jane Mills Naples, FL Editors’ note: Mills is a baseball historian. OCTO-MOMS Reading the Summer 2009 issue has been like coming home to myself, and my sisters—women everywhere! I’m 80 and remember your Spring 1972 issue, the cover of which provided the inspiration for this summer’s cover. With five children in eight years, born between 1951 and 1959, I felt like that. Thank you [also] for the article by Anna Badkhen, “Baghdad Under- ground.” All over the world, includ- ing in our own country, we still need safe shelters for abused women and children. The whole issue is full of vi- tal information, and encouragement. We have lots of work to do, on behalf of women—our sisters, ourselves! —Ellen N. Duell Yellow Springs, OH I’m unutterably tired of seeing moth- ers portrayed as super-jugglers. We do not have eight arms, and it does us no service to portray us as indefatiga- bly organized, efficient and accom- plished. I make food from a box, and my house is generally a mess. I stay on top of my obligations, work for a living and parent my child. I do it without a partner. I’m tired. I get irri- tated every time my eye falls on this month’s cover. Forgive the cranky tone—I value everything that Ms. does and is. I did not expect you to perpetuate that particular cliché. —Lise Brody Providence, RI ADDRESS ALL CORRESPONDENCE TO Letters to the Editor, Ms. magazine, 433 S.
