BABY STEPS Realizing that perpetual change is a necessary attribute of every small business is only half the battle. Implementing the change is equally challenging, if not more. How many times have you discussed healthier eating habits, more exercise, or spending more time with your family and friends? Many small business owners feel when they make a change, it must be massive. This idea in itself is inhibiting and as a result, usually halts the entire process before it even begins. It also signifies a train of thought that identifies a business as something that is still or stagnant that can be “fixed” all at once, which is completely contradictory to successful business practices. Running a successful business is like living a healthy life. It is not just one miracle attribute, it is the synergy of the entire experience and it happens consistently, a little at a time. Baby steps in a positive direction can be as simple as gaining a competent part-time bookkeeper, contracting a cleaning service, or simply delegating the ownership of a task successfully to an appropriate team member. Change is happening every moment, of every day, in every part of our lives and world. Realizing this fact truly means that things will never be the same and that the future, to a certain extent, is unknown, which in itself is difficult to accept. Those who truly succeed in this world understand and embrace change. They have become aware of their opportunities, as well as their opportunities lost when they have failed to delegate, whether the loss has been personal or business. Although it can be terrifying at times to try something new, one thing we can be certain of is the outcome of our current methods. So do we take the leap of faith into the future, do we try something new? Or is the certainty of the outcome so important we are willing to spiral downward with a system we know has already run its course? Just think, if you were to make just a few small changes every month, what kind of impact it would have on your business, your bottom line and, most important, your quality of life and peace of mind.
