how to use this book Welcome to Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals' Successful Practice Handbook, an entrepreneur's guide to a thriving practice. Expect More, with Les Join Les Sweeney at www.abmp.com and www.massageprofessionals.com to read his blog about insights into the profession. This handbook is designed to offer guidance in creating a financially healthy and ethically sound practice regardless of your level of experience. Your training may have already included business education; if so, this handbook will be a vital supplement to what you already know. To those just getting started in the profession, this handbook can be a lifeline. Our members use the Successful Practice Handbook in a variety of ways. You'll find it offers pragmatic advice, ideas, and encouragement to help improve your odds of professional success. While we realize that not every ABMP member currently aspires to operate an independent practice, more than half of our members do work privately, and experience suggests that more will pursue their own businesses at some point in their careers. ABMP has a mission to increase the number of successful massage and bodywork practitioners. You increase your odds by developing and acting on a good business plan, adopting sound policies, and maintaining accurate records. However, the real challenge is more often personal. The guiding philosophy this handbook presents is therefore simple. Approach your business goals with a strong sense of personal and professional worth, and be confident in the skills and knowledge you apply on your clients' behalf. A population of overworked, overstressed potential clients wants to connect with you. They expect to pay for your services. Most of them, in fact, will consider your price a bargain. Don't be shy about presenting your fee policies or asking for payment. They know your labors are worth it. So as you peruse the contents of the Successful Practice Handbook, do so with confidence. Your skills are improving every day with each new experience. Sharpen your readiness by absorbing the material contained in these pages with the firm belief that you already have a strong foundation. You're in store for a wealth of information on a variety of subjects, including business basics, managing your financial health, marketing, advertising, and promotion. Good luck on your journey. Let ABMP know how we can continue to help. Les Sweeney, NCTM ABMP President
