Cover Letter According to William S. Frank, author of 200 Letters for Job Hunters, "Interviews produce job offers, but letters produce interviews." Short of calling the decision-maker you hope to interview with, a letter is the best way to get your name in front of the right person. A personalized cover letter, accompanying your resume, introduces you, tells what you're looking for, and, most importantly, gives the letter writer the opportunity to show his or her enthusiasm. While it's not a face to face, a well-written letter can create as much goodwill as a personal meeting. In developing a cover letter, it's important to be comprehensive, yet not overly detailed. This is an opportunity to put your best foot forward, so think clearly through your objectives. Don't fill the letter with a lot of fluff, yet don't be afraid to include personal information explaining your devotion to the profession, your love of the work, and your dedication to clients. Still, be careful to not offend your audience. A potential employer may be pleased with your professed dedication, but may not want to hear about your spiritual philosophy as it relates to the work. Be sure to personalize the letter for each reader. A form letter is convenient, but it has as much character as its name implies. Why would you be interested in working for the day spa across town? What can you bring to the table (so to speak) at the nearby health club? What inspiration could you find on a cruise ship? Each letter should have its own character. Job Search So now it's time for brass tacks. You've got your plan in place, or do you? Have you fully researched the market? Do you know what the standard salary is for bodyworkers at the day spa, chiropractor's office, health club? Do you know how tight the market is for new entrants?
