What is Aromatase & Hyperaromatization? Aromatase is an enzyme responsible for a key step in the synthesis of estrogens. It is responsible for the aromatization of androgens (compounds that stimulate or control male characteristics). Androgens are precursors to all estrogens in men and women. The primary and most well known androgen is testosterone. Men and women who are overweight, diabetics or taking testosterone beware! Men with low testosterone, low libido, lessening muscle tone, difficulty losing weight, and gynecomastia (breast enlargement) likely have hyperaromatization. Hyperaromatization is defined as excess conversion of testosterone into estrogens. Testosterone hyperaromatization is almost always accompanied by insulin resistance.
