The earliest GDI aero engine prototypes appeared during WWI and by WWII many German aircra used the technology, including the Messerschmi Bf109 and Focke-Wulf Fw190. It migrated to cars soon a erward, ini ally on the two-stroke Gutbrod Superior of 1951 and, in 1955, reaching four- strokes on the Mercedes 300SL. On bikes, the tech has been tried on two-strokes, notably the notoriously poor-running Bimota V Due, and was originally planned to be used on the Motus MST. Both direct injec on and conven onal port fuel injec on have their own advantages and disadvantages. Port injec on, which is used by virtually every modern motorcycle, adds the fuel to the air upstream of the intake valve. That means there's plenty of me for the gasoline and air to mix before it reaches the combus on chamber and gets ignited by the spark plug. The fuel, an excellent solvent, also helps reduce deposit forma on on the intake valve caused by crankcase breather systems that typically vent to the airbox for burning in the engine. And while fuel vapor sprayed at high pressure into the port no onally cools the intake charge, the fuel itself displaces air, reducing air volume entering the cylinder. That's all good, but port injec on is increasingly a problem for engineers trying to minimize emissions and squeeze every last horsepower from each drop of fuel. One downside to GDI is that it's a real challenge persuading the fuel to atomize and mix thoroughly with the intake air in the incredibly short me between its being directly injected into the cylinder and the spark plug igni ng it. That's why GDI isn't hard to find on a car that revs to only 7,000 rpm, but hasn't emerged yet on bikes that o en rev twice that high. wOUNDED wARRIOR pROjEcT AND HARlEY- DAvIDsON jOIN FORcEs Wounded Warrior Project ® (WWP) and Harley-Davidson Motor Company ® are again hitting the road to bring Rolling Project Odyssey ® to wounded veterans. Rolling Project Odyssey is a unique motorcycle group riding experience that aims to support veterans in their recoveries from invisible wounds of war. First partnering with WWP on the experience in 2015, Harley- Davidson is sponsoring addi onal group rides to extend the program to more veterans across the United States. "We are grateful for Harley- davidson's support and honored to partner with such a legendary brand as we fuel the future of Rolling Project odyssey," said Lt. Col. (Ret.) Michael Richardson, WWP vice president of independence services and mental health. "our goal is to focus warriors on their present to enable the growth of their future. The overall Rolling Project odyssey experience is designed to encourage warriors to face adversi es of the past and accomplish goals together with peers facing similar challenges, just as they did on the ba lefield." One of WWP's marquee mental health programs for veterans, Project Odyssey helps warriors manage post-trauma c stress disorder (PTSD), trauma c brain injury (TBI), and other combat stress through adventure-based learning that encourages a connec on with fellow veterans and nature. "Rolling Project odyssey was a life-changing experience for me," said Jonathan Goolsby, an Army veteran who a ended a previous Rolling Project Odyssey in Georgia. "The experience has taught me many things that I have been able to implement into my daily life, like finding my center and keeping my cool when things start to get tough." It noted that A orney General Bill Barr has "issued comprehensive guidance interpre ng religious-liberty protec ons" under the Cons tu on. "The department filed a Statement of Interest in support of a church in Mississippi that allegedly sought to hold parking lot worship services, in which congregants listened to their pastor preach over their car radios, while sitting in their cars in the church parking lot with their windows rolled up," A orney General Bill Barr said. "The City of Greenville fined congregants $500 per person for a ending these parking lot services – while permi ng ci zens to a end nearby drive-in restaurants, even with their windows open."
