Page 28 | Abby's Magazine - www.AbbysMag.com Dogs, cats and humans have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). This endocannabinoid system works to regulate certain body func ons such as pain, mood, sleep, appe te, and immunity. It is not a coincidence that dogs and cats have cannabinoid receptors in their brains. In fact, they may have more than humans. This indicates they were designed to use cannabinoids. From anxiety, noise phobias, pain, seizures, arthri s to cancer, cannabinoids have a beneficial effect for dogs and cats. Understanding CBD Oil CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis sa va plant. Cannabis sa va is a general plant name. There are many different strains of this plant. Some strains make the federally illegal marijuana and others make hemp for industrial and therapeu c use. The cannabis plant that makes industrial hemp is different than the plant that makes medicinal hemp. Cannabis plants contain both CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). CBD does not have any psychotropic (mind-altering) effects; THC does. Cannabis plants that contain less than 0.3% THC are known as hemp plants. Cannabinoids work by modula ng cannabinoid receptors in the brain and body. CBD Oil vs. Cannabis Oil vs. Hemp Oil CBD Oil: Is a compound that's extracted from the cannabis plant. It is found in hemp and marijuana, which are both members of the cannabis species. The CBD oil that's being sold legally across the U.S. is derived from hemp, which means that it contains less than 0.3 percent THC (the compound that creates the feeling of being "high"). Cannabis Oil: Comes from the marijuana plant and it offers a number of cannabinoids, including both CBD and THC. The amount of THC present in cannabis oil ranges, depending on the plant variety. Health benefits include improving sleep disorders, reducing anxiety, boos ng appe te, relieving pain and an -cancer benefits. The psychoac ve effects vary with the levels of THC. Hemp oil: Is extracted from the seeds (hemp seed oil) or stalk of the hemp plant. Hemp oil has no THC. It is popular in the health world for providing polyunsaturated fa y acids in recipes or it is used topically to nourish the skin. Hemp seed oil is also used as a carrier oil in CBD products. Conditions That CBD Has Been Shown To Be Effective With Include: 1. Anxiety Disorders. Used in conjunc on with behavior modifica on techniques, CBD helps with separa on anxiety, noise phobias (big problem in Florida with thunderstorms all summer long) and inappropriate social interac on with other animals. 2. Pain Reduc on. Clinical studies have proven CBD reduces inflamma on and pain. It helps to decrease the produc on of inflammatory cytokines that can lead to pain, swelling, autoimmune disease and hypersensi vi es. 3. An -Tumor Effects. Research suggests that CBD oil has an - tumor proper es. Not only can it inhibit the growth of cancer cells, but also studies indicate that CBD and other cannabinoids are able to inhibit the spread of cancer cells while inducing apoptosis (programed cell death). 4. Seizures. The effec veness in people for trea ng seizures and epilepsy is well documented. Studies are underway to evaluate the efficacy in dogs. CBD does not have the toxic side effects that currently accepted an -seizure medica ons have. 5. Diabetes. The best way to prevent diabetes is to stop feeding processed food diets (kibble and canned foods) that are 40%- 60% sugar. Dogs and cats were designed to eat a diet with less than 1% carbohydrate. CBD is able to reduce plasma levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines that trigger hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar) and insulin resistance. 6. Nausea and Diges ve Issues. Again, the only way to prevent serious GI issues is to stop feeding the diet that is causing the inflamma on. Processed foods are devoid of diges ve enzymes needed to aid diges on. The high sugar content in processed foods creates inflamma on. All of the above, plus toxins found in non-organic foods, create leaky gut and consequent inflamma on. CBD can be a therapeu c agent as it reduces inflamma on, but it can't fix a bad diet. How CBD Is Dispensed For Pets CBD oil comes in a variety of delivery methods: 1.) Oil. 2.) Tinctures. A ncture is the dis lled liquid from the plant, to which oil is o en added. Administered via a dropper. Some companies may add catnip or salmon oil to increase palatability for cats. 3.) A salve for topical use. 4.) Treats. How To Dose CBD Dosing depends on many factors, such as the individual pet's sensi vity, the condi on being treated, and the pa ent's body weight. Keep in mind that it may take up to 3-7 days to see a response. It is best to start with the lower recommended dose for CBD Is Not Just For Humans
