Burning coals are men oned several mes in Scripture, usually referring to the literal red-hot coals of a fire. Some refer to John 21:9 indica ng that the "burning coals" were a blessing as it was one of the best ways to cook. However, Proverbs 25:21–22 has a reference to burning coals that is probably not literal: "If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you." In the Greek, we use this saying to say that, we are helping someone or we are se ng them up; in this case the Greek means to "gather the coals for them" so they can cook for themselves. Having burning coals in that era, was the best way to cook. Paul uses the same wording again in Romans 12:20, speaking of literal coals, but again not to place on someone's head but to gather and supply them with. Paul's choice of this metaphor is explained by the context of Romans 12. Verse 21 says in the Greek: "… don't be won by evil (doing wrong) but win through doing good." Anyone can return evil for evil. But when a Chris an does so, the watching world sees nothing different about our lives. It is not even clear who is right and who is wrong when we respond in kindness to the one who wronged us. And, it drives them crazy! When we follow Jesus' instruc on to love our enemies (Ma hew 5:43–44) and return good for evil, the contrast is stark. Our kind and gentle reac on to hatred, spotlights the depravity of the one who treated us poorly and leaves the hur ul person alone in his or her hatefulness. Nothing pricks the conscience of a hateful person like a so , forgiving spirit in the one that has wronged us (Proverbs 15:1). The "burning coals" that are heaped on his or her head could be a reference to the burning shame and anger they will feel as their conscience works upon them. Here is what the Septuagint text says word per word in Proverbs 15:1: "The sweet response soothes aggrava on (anger,) but the mournful spoken word excites rage". Here is the best part: Burning coals in the Bible also symbolize judgment (Psalm 140:10) and spiritual purifica on (Isaiah 6:6; Levi cus 16:12). God is compared o en to fire (Deuteronomy 4:24; Hebrews 12:9) and is described in terms that relate to fire's heat, brightness, and power (Exodus 24:17; Isaiah 34:14; Psalm 18:8). Another understanding of "burning coals" in Proverbs 25:22 is that our right response to those who do us harm, allows God's own power and judgment to fall upon that person. We must "leave room for God's wrath" (Romans 12:19) and wait for the vengeance God brings in His own time. When we relinquish to God our right to take revenge, we show faith in His justice. In the Greek, Romans 12:19 reads: "Beloved, do not revenge by your self but, give space to wrath because it is wri en: To me belongs the revenge, I will make retribu on says the Lord". God will bring convic on upon the sinning heart. Responding the way Jesus did to His enemies (Luke 23:34) allows the "burning coals" of God's righteousness and jus ce to operate within the soul of that person and hopefully bring him to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). In summary: Treat the ones that do you wrong with kindness, not because they deserve it but because it is who you are in Christ and Christ is who you serve.
