R. ERIC MADRID, MD JUGGLING DIET & EXERCISE Over the past 200 years, sugar consumption has increased from 2 pounds per person per year, to almost 152 pounds per person each year. This means the average person now consumes 43 teaspoons of sugar each day. If this seems unbelievable, realize a single 12 oz can of soda alone contains 10 teaspoons. Some of this sugar is obvious, like that found in Some of this sugar is obvious, like that found in desserts, candy and soft drinks, while the not so obvious sugars are hidden in bread, snacks, pastas and condiments. Sugar can be hidden from plain sight by using names such as: high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), corn syrup, cane syrup, fruit juice, fruit juice concentrate, maltose, dextrose, honey, maltodextrin, rice syrup, sucrose and many more. This excess sugar intake has resulted in increased incidences of diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, chronic pain and many other chronic diseases. It is well known that cancer cells thrive when sugar-cancer's preferred fuel source-is available without restriction. Sugar and excessive simple carbohydrate consumption Sugar and excessive simple carbohydrate consumption causes the pancreas to release the insulin hormone. When a simple carbohydrate is consumed, like a bread, pasta or white rice, the carbohydrate rapidly breaks down into sugar and is rapidly absorbed into the blood, raising blood sugar levels. Insulin helps sugar, when needed, to enter into muscle, heart and brain cells. If more sugar is available than required, the body will store the excess available than required, the body will store the excess sugar as fat tissue and cholesterol. Therefore, for those wanting to lose weight, lower their cholesterol or lower blood sugar, limiting sugar and simple carbohydrates is crucial. This can sometimes be accomplished by consuming a ketogenic or paleolithic diet. Visit our website for more information. View Dr. Madrid's online profile HERE 20
