It's very rare today to find someone who doesn't have a connection to at least one music genre. Music has the ability to shift our mood across a spectrum of emotions within seconds. Even without words, a rhythm can inspire us to feel a depth of emotion, or even shift our mood, as though there were something magical about it. Because of this strong effect, scien- tists have been researching music therapy for patients tists have been researching music therapy for patients who are recovering from various procedures, who have been diagnosed with cancer, or have suffered recent strokes. It has been discovered that patients who have suf- fered strokes or have neurological conditions, often present mood disorders as a comorbidities (i.e. depres- sion or anxiety). "The lifetime risk of major depression in people with MS has been estimated to be as high as 50% compared to 10% to 15% in the general population." 1 Researchers have turned to music as a possible treatment for this staggering statistic. In clinical studies, music therapy has shown to improve emo- tional expression, communication/interpersonal skills, self-esteem, and quality of life, while at the same time, reduce the severity of depression and anxiety.
